Research

Among the subjects I am interested in is the investigation of astrophysical sources of gravitational waves. To this purpose, together with several collaborators, I have built the Whisky code, which adopts finite-difference discretisation schemes in Cartesian coordinates to solve in three dimension and without symmetries the relativistic hydrodynamics equations in curved and dynamical spacetimes. The code is being currently used by several researchers for the investigation of different astrophysical scenarios. I have been and am particularly involved with the study of the collapse or rotating relativistic stars to Kerr black holes, the bar-mode instability of rapidly rotating relativistic stars, head-on collisions of relativistic stars and binary neutron-star mergers. Whisky has recently undergone a new stage of development, including the solution of the equations of (ideal) magnetohydrodynamics.
